Breaking Free From Hidden Patterns-Mental Health Therapy

Discover How Early Life Patterns Shape Your Present Reality

We Don't Live a Life, We Live a Pattern

Understanding the invisible forces that shape our behaviors and relationships is crucial in the journey of personal growth and healing. As a mental health professional in Perth, I've witnessed countless individuals struggle with recurring challenges, unable to pinpoint why certain patterns keep emerging in their lives. Through years of clinical experience and specialised training in schema therapy, I've come to understand that these patterns aren't random - they're deeply rooted in our early life experiences and continue to influence our present-day choices, often without our awareness. One of my biggest realisations as a therapist and a senior clinician in the mental health field is this: we don't live a life, we live a pattern.

Attracted to Emotional Unavailability

Are you repeatedly drawn to relationships with people who seem emotionally unavailable or cold?

Feeling Misunderstood and Alone

Do you feel that even those closest to you don't truly understand or care about you?

Struggling with Self-Worth

Do you often believe, at your core, that you are not good enough, that you're defective, or that no one could truly love you?

Always Putting Others First

Do you constantly prioritise the needs of others above your own, to the point where you don't even know what your own needs are? Maybe you often say, "I'm fine as long as others are happy," yet you feel tired, burnt out, and emotionally drained.

Living in Constant Fear

Are you afraid that something bad will happen to you or the people you love?

Success Without Satisfaction

Do you still feel unfulfilled, unhappy, or undeserving despite your success, social approval, or good standing?

Are These Patterns Holding You Back?

If any of these resonate, you may be caught in what we call "life traps" or, in psychological terms, schemas.

What Are Life Traps?

Life traps are deeply ingrained patterns that begin in childhood and reverberate through our lives. They originate from experiences with our families, peers, or other influential adults. Perhaps you were abandoned, criticised, overprotected, abused, excluded, or deprived. These early experiences create a mental matrix that shapes how you think, feel, act, and relate to others

Life traps are more than just thoughts or habits; they are entrenched beliefs about yourself, others, and the world. They form the core of your sense of self, create your memory framework, and trigger strong emotions like anger, sadness, or anxiety. They also dictate how you interpret those emotions and how you cope when they arise.

How Life Traps Are Formed

Each of us has a unique story. In childhood, our survival depends on our caregivers. We adapt to protect ourselves if they respond to our emotions in ways that dismiss, punish, or shame us. For instance:

The Origins of Our Protective Patterns: Childhood Survival Stories

Imagine a child who cries because they are scared or upset, and their caregiver responds with, "Stop crying, or I'll give you something to cry about." The child learns to suppress their emotions to avoid further pain.

Or, if a parent dismisses a child's needs with shaming comments or physical punishment, the child develops coping strategies, such as becoming overly independent, people-pleasing, or suppressing their true feelings

These coping strategies are ingenious solutions to the circumstances we faced as children. However, as adults, they become the "masks" we wear, disconnecting us from our true selves.

Breaking Free From Patterns

Awareness is the first step to breaking free from life traps. It's crucial not to judge yourself for the coping strategies you developed. These strategies were your way of surviving painful circumstances, and they were the best solutions you could create with the resources you had at the time.

As an adult, you can uncover these patterns, understand their origins, and let them go. This process allows you to reconnect with your authentic self and shift your life meaningfully.
